Set in a historic 84,000 sq. ft building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, New Lab will become home to designers, engineers and entrepreneurs innovating and growing businesses under one roof. The mission of New Lab is to inspire new paradigms in high-tech green manufacturing; to promote interaction between institutions, technical disciplines, designers and local communities; to provide open access to state-of-the-art facilities for innovators, inventors, and other creative individuals creating meaningful products and technology; to support the growth of new industries and foster job creation in the U.S.A.

I joined New Lab to spearhead the experience design for its digital platforms, which would be the lynchpin of the brand experience as well as the service layer for its members. Through the official opening of the space in June 2016, we developed the digital layer of New Lab including a Member App with a suite of online tools and services, onsite digital display systems, as well as its web and social presence.

When the doors to The Lab first opened in Midtown New York in 2012, the results far exceeded client expectations. As a space designed to be at the forefront of technological innovation, it was a given that The Lab be designed as a space that can adapt and refresh over time. In 2013, AT&T retained our team once again to help conceive and develop an enhanced and updated Lab experience that could extend and transform the foundational space, presenting the Lab as a living, breathing, ever-evolving environment.

The foundations we laid for the space in 2012 was the proof of concept. The results proved that the need for such an interactive and experiential space was valid and well-substantiated. The challenge now was to work within the constraints of the brick and mortar dimensions and hardware foundations to truly expand on what it meant to create an engaging, immersive and dynamic experience that gave the client not only the opportunity to update content effortlessly, but also provide them with the ability to create truly unique interactive experiences on the fly for any type of visitor.

We conceived a consistent two-way interaction mechanism between visitors and the many touch surfaces, allowing their interactions to shape the content throughout the experience. We materialized different user profiles into 3D printed icons and activated them with NFC sensors. As visitors enter the lobby, they select an icon from a collection representing various demographics, and they use it to activate insightful data experiences throughout the Lab. Additionally, by tapping the icons on the sensor trays at anytime, visitors could ‘like’ a piece of content and request more information.

Differentiating from the status quo of click-through product demos, we brought products and services to life in real-time using cross-device simulations that activated content across various screens, thus giving visitors a real-world demo of how these products and services actually work.

An interactive coffee table that transforms the personal consultation experience at the Nike Bespoke store in Soho, NY. Nike’s Bespoke program is the premium tier of NIKEiD, offering shoe fanatics personal consultations with a Nike designer to create their own customized pair of sneakers. Presently, the Nike Bespoke designer meets with customers on appointment and guides them through a manual design process choosing from over 200 material swatches that are unavailable elsewhere.

The vision for the Bespoke 2.0 was to elevate this premium customer experience without sacrificing the intimacy of the consultation setting. Conceived around a coffee table setting, the new Nike touch table seamlessly integrates interface and user experience, allowing the technologies to remain hidden within the design process.

Developed as part of Mill Digital’s realtime 3D rendering R&D efforts, this visionware was presented to the NIKEiD global team as the next level of premium product interaction. Using switchable glass, IR technology and short throw projection, the custom designed touch table was conceived as the centrepiece of the customer experience at Nike’s Bespoke studio in Soho, NY. The software design accounts for hyper responsive zero-lag display, and the interface offers an expansive and scalable swatch library, custom artwork scanning abilities and auto-generation of factory-ready purchase orders.

A large format info map. The aim was to visualize a complex web of data, encompassing all the challenges and hurdles faced by global business systems. As drab as it may sound, this map boasts to be the first of its kind in the business world, addressing a gaping need: Laying out all of the biggest challenges faced by companies in order to identify entry points for positive interventions. The goal? To improve business models by placing people and the planet ahead of profit.

The B Team was founded by Sir Richard Branson and Jochen Zeitz with the aim of creating a future world where business is a driving force for social and environmental progress, not simply driven by economic goals alone.

My job was to categorically decode a stack of rudimentary sketches and flowcharts that identified challenge areas, interconnections and intervention ideas researched by the B Team. Then visualize all this data into a lucid, multi-tiered information map that would spark discussions at the first annual summit of B-Team leaders from around the world. Given just a week to accomplish the task, we shied away from interactive solutions and resorted to printing 80″ x 60″ layers of vinyl prints that broke down each tier of the map. The success of the info-map has prompted the B Team’s interest in creating an iPad version that could serve as a pocket tool for C-level executives.

Mill Touch is a bespoke, large format, multi-touch installation showcasing over 1000 projects that span The Mill’s 20 year portfolio. The goal was to create an interactive piece that could be experienced physically, complementing the vast archive of Mill work, and to do so in a way that was visually arresting and intuitive all at once.

The touch screen is made of transparency-switchable Smartglass and housed in a custom frame, allowing for borderless, full bleed projections. A fluid particle field serves as a celestial backdrop for all content. Users can explore the constellation of projects or use conventional methods of selection. Other unique interface elements include a before-and-after lens, a free-floating dockable search keyboard, and a lenticular video scrubber.

Built in Cinder, I had the pleasure of working with the framework’s creators, which made the experience extra special. Having frequently worked with web technologies that pose limitations on interactivity and visuals, it was incredible to see the full range of visual possibilities offered by the Cinder library. The result is a beautiful, ‘living’ object of design that has transformed the Mill’s work space. Mill Touch set a new benchmark for interactive installations within the industry, winning a place in the Communication Arts Interactive Annual of 2011, among other awards.

I also co-directed the ‘Behind the Scenes’ film of the Making of Mill-Touch, which has since spread virally online, generating both a sizable buzz and a steady flow of business for The Mill’s emerging experiential design department.
